nFront Password Filter Vista Client (Beta Release)

Overview

Many of you are already familiar with our client for Windows XP. The client is optional (i.e. nFront Password Filter will still filter passwords even if you do not deploy the client). The client enhances the user experience and may lower helpdesk traffic by helping end users remember the password policy requirements.

The Windows XP client:

  1. Modifies the Password Change dialog box to show the list of password policy rules that apply to this specific user account
  2. Provides a more detailed failure message to the end user if he or she types a password that does not meet the requirements
  3. Provides an optional password strength meter to help the user select a strong password.

The Vista client offers the same features as the XP client, except for the strength meter. The Beta version does not include support for the password strength meter. However, we plan to add the strength meter for the final release.

Quick Answers

The client installation does not require a reboot. It is a credential provider and they can be dynamically replaced without reboot. The client can be deployed automatically via a softare GPO just like any other MSI software package. The client is only available in a 32-bit version now and we do not plan a 64-bit release. We expect to keep the client in Beta for 1 month or less. We have tested the client with Windows 7 and it works great. The Vista and XP client will be merged into 1 MSI package in the final release and you will be able to deploy the client to any Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 machine. We do not remove the Microsoft default credential provider.
